Starlight Headliner

Every last constellation formation within a Starlight Headliner can be personally selected by the motor car’s owner. Crafting pre-set formations takes a minimum of nine hours, but a personalised pattern requires its own template — and can take more than 17 hours of meticulous attention from at least two different craftspeople. 

To begin, the leather is perforated with 800 to 1,600 holes, each carefully counted. Fibre optic lights are then deftly woven through and set into the perforations. Once the craftsperson ensures that the height of the fibres is correct on the concealed side, they’re expertly placed on the visible leather’s surface, ready to shine. The end result is the perfect alliance of traditional craftsmanship and modern-day technology.

Since the Starlight Headliner made its 2007 debut in a Phantom with 800 lights, its scale has expanded impressively. Now, a Starlight Headliner can boast up to 2,117 individual lights across the entirety of the motor car roof’s length.

The personalised nature of a  Starlight Headliner knows no bounds; each can be custom-created so that it is truly reflective of an owner’s personal taste. 

Previously, one owner requested the lights be configured in the shape of his family’s coat of arms, while another asked that the configuration represent the Ursa Major and Minor constellations. Our craftspeople have even embedded the iconic Rolls-Royce logo, illuminating it separately from the rest of the stars.

This limitless nature of Rolls-Royce artisans’ talent is on full display in the Celestial Phantom — a motor car that elevated the Starlight Headliner’s original concept with audacious flair. Built to honour the significant moment when the first ever new Phantom was unveiled at Goodwood, the Celestial Phantom’s Starlight Headliner depicts the constellations exactly as they were over the Home of Rolls-Royce on that historic day.
